It’s a big deal for Geniuses“Effort to reach the mass market from the ownership of Facebook Giphy has over 700 million users who check the search engine daily for animated GIFs, or those silly animated images associated with internet memes and saved in the graphics interchange (GIF) format.
Giphy users can take their Genie avatars wherever they already use Giphy. Genies plans to roll out hundreds of partnerships this year where users can use their Genies to enable a “virtual portable identity”. Giphy is the first partnership in the rollout, and the communities are a good match as they both focus on self-expression.
To upload a Genie avatar in Giphy, Genies users create a Genie in the Genies app, then use the deep link to connect them to Giphy. Once in the Giphy app, users can upload their Genies to their channel and use it in Giphy. (Users must have accounts for Genies and Giphy for this feature to work.)
Until now, Genies has been used exclusively by celebrities, taste makers, and influencers to commemorate moments in the digital world. The company has thousands of celebrities who use its Genies for album releases, song announcements, and more. Celebrities using Genies include Shawn Mendes, J.Lo, Offset, Rihanna, DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Cardi B and J Balvin.
Genies made it possible for celebrities to be able to drop off digital products and merchandise directly to their fans in the Genies app. This has allowed them to earn money during the pandemic, even though they cannot travel to make business endorsements or make appearances.
Thanks to the custom integration with Giphy, fans can easily upload these already accessorized avatars to their Giphy channel.
Akash Nigam, CEO of Genies, believes Genies avatars will make the metaverse possible, but not as a single virtual world. Rather, people can take their avatars and move from location to location in a distributed metaverse. He said the partnership with Giphy will allow users to culturally take ownership of their digital identity and use Genies in the digital communities to which they already belong.
“Audience potential is important as Giphy’s platform has a daily user reach of over 700 million people,” said Nigam. “Our goal has been to create a metaverse where people can engage with their true identities, so bringing Genies to Giphy is an important first step for us.”
Caroline Huber, chief product officer at Giphy, said in a statement that Genies will offer Giphy users another way to express themselves through visual communication.
The integration took a while, but Nigam said the company has done a lot of work to specifically customize Genies for Giphy. Going forward, integrations will be easier to do as Genies will complete more of its technical documentation for partners.
“I am so excited that consumers have the first taste of creating a 3D genius themselves and using it on one of the most expressive platforms in the world,” said Nigam.
