You can’t launch a next generation console without some sort of new racing game. And Sony, who invented this tactic, honors the tradition with Gran Turismo 7. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the game is coming PlayStation 5 when it was revealed today. Expect the tires to be very round.
Sony launched Gran Turismo Sport for PlayStation 4 in 2017. After several entries in the racing-simulation series, the developer Polyphony Digital has focused on competitive multiplayer. Now the studio is presenting this on the PlayStation 5.
Gran Turismo and the genre of racing have reached a point of diminishing performance in terms of visuals. Gran Turismo Sport on PS4 and Forza Motorsport 7 on Xbox already seem almost photorealistic. In addition to that, they generally operate at 60 frames per second. This does not leave much room for improvement on next generation systems.
But with PS5 supporting HDMI 2.1, it can video output at 4K and 120Hz. And Gran Turismo is the exact type of game that could benefit from a higher refresh rate. This is something Microsoft has already shown with Dirt 5 running at 120 frames per second on Xbox Series X.
