Sony wants to repeat a success Playstation 4 strategy on PlayStation 5. Sony Interactive Entertainment exploited Resogun developer Housemarque to build Returnal for PlayStation 5. Returnal is a moody sci-fi action game featuring a woman seemingly trapped in a harsh and unforgiving world.
Returnal has no release date.
While Housemarque returns to launch a game on PlayStation 5, Returnal is a slight departure for the studio. The company previously focused on arcade-style versions with fast, replayable action. Returnal places more emphasis on character and narrative.
Resogun was a PlayStation 4 launch game. And in the days leading up to Uncharted 4 and God of War, developers like Housemarque filled the PS4 library. Sony did not originally think that the PS4 would turn into a huge success. When the system made its way around the world, it surprised SIE without preparation. It took the publisher years to meet the demand for successful releases.
But since their launch, smaller studios like Housemarque have been helping Sony to complete its release list. And Resogun, with its arcade-style shooter, was an immediate demonstration at launch.
For the PS5, Sony is ready with a range of big budget games. But it will still take time. This is both because Sony wants to fine-tune these games to perfection and because it wants to give the PS5 time to develop its owner base.
In the meantime, however, Housemarque can help hangover fans while waiting for God of War 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
