Zynga’s Small Giant Games studio has released Puzzle Combat, a new mobile match-3 action role-playing game from the creator of Empires and puzzles.

Small Giant Games’ success with Empires & Puzzles has been huge, and that’s one of the reasons Zynga bought the Helsinki-based studio for $ 560 million (and more in subsequent contingent bonuses) in 2018. The acquisition was significant as it helped San Francisco-based Zynga return to growth and ultimately led to other deals such as Gram’s acquisitions. Games, Rollic and Peak Games.

Another way to see the importance of this next Small Giant game is to see what the previous game did. Zynga isn’t busting sales of this game, but Michael Pachter, analyst at Wedbush Securities, estimates that Empires & Puzzles has generated $ 1 billion in revenue to date, and likely $ 500 million in 2020.

The new free to play game on iOS and Android is a zombie-themed title where players recruit heroes, build bases, and battle each other in player-versus-player battles using match-3 gameplay mechanics.

“Puzzle Combat takes place in a modern environment with zombies, modern weapons and war machines that you can attack together as a clan,” said Bernard Kim, president of the publication at Zynga, in an interview with GamesBeat. “It’s really a lot of fun with the puzzles, and it’s a really hard metagame to master. We are very excited about it. “

Kim will be on a panel with Nick Tuosto of Liontree on M&A at our next GamesBeat Summit 2021 event April 28 and 29.

In Puzzle Combat, players will immerse themselves in fighting the enemies of the Dread Army with bonuses by creating unique match combinations. Players recruit spies, medics, demolition experts, and more to fight alongside them, each bringing unique special attacks to the melee.

Players will also design bases by constructing and upgrading buildings such as foundries, workshops, training schools, and neighborhoods. Jose Saarniniemi said in a statement that the game combines key elements of Empires & Puzzles with a modern combat-themed design.

To win, players can summon heroes from hundreds of individualized choices, each with unique abilities, and collect different weapons to upgrade and use in the field. As players progress, they can also join alliances to share the best tactics and participate in challenging team events to promote their heroes, advance together, and form the ultimate fighting force.

The game has over 200 unique heroes, each with special attacks. The game will have raid seasons with rewards. The cooperative alliance game modes allow players to dismantle powerful war machines, attack rivals in team battles, and dominate events as a team.

Social features, such as global and alliance chats, allow players to exchange tactics and form teams to reach the next level of play. And limited-time events allow players to earn unique rewards and compete with other players.

The launch comes as a surprise as Zynga said the game is due to debut this year, but it turned out the game performed particularly well in limited market testing, Kim said.

“We’re really excited about the performance of the game and believe the time has come to adapt the marketing to the product as well,” said Kim.

The title has some similarities in gameplay and base construction, but it is not a sequel to Empires & Puzzles.
